Improving game stability

Post by Snaek » Thu Apr 02, 2015 9:57 am

A big part of this server move was improving the stability of the game and eliminating potential lag issues wherever we can. We wanted to be on our own server instead of a shared one so that we weren't exposed to someone else bringing the entire server down. We've also learned a lot since we originally set up this game and this was an opportunity to improve efficiency in a number of areas with the fresh start. Things we didn't know to do the first time around.

We've left a lot of things wide open and now that the game has aged, we're seeing the negative impacts of it. A lot of checks were put in place during this move to help, but there's still a lot left to do. The main area of focus coming up is going to be on adding limits to bank deposited inventory and room items. It only takes one person with a large number of items deposited to send a lag spike through the game. Normally this results in the game continuing to bog down until it has to be rebooted, or in some situations, it crashes. As nice as it is to store everything, it's for the good of the game that we put a cap in place. If you are a digital hoarder, I suggest you use the month of April to do some spring cleaning. Be mindful of when you do it though please. Late at night, early in the morning, not during scheduled events, etc. We haven't settled on a cap yet and have some testing to do to see how resources are counted (hopefully 1 bundle = 1 item), but I'd say expect us to drop it below 500. How low we go will depend on how good we think it can be for the game. Less storage encourages player housing and gets more things in circulation, in theory.

To be clear, it's not a topic up for debate. This is a move that has to happen and we will make a final decision on the bank and room limits based on what we feel is the best balance for the game. Nothing will be lost in the bank if you are over the cap when it is implemented. You just won't be able to deposit anything else until you get below it. We'll give you advanced notice before any changes are made.

Got a fix ready for deposited items in the bank. We're likely going to bring the cap all the way down to 300 items, which we still feel is a generous amount of free storage for your player. Not to mention your carry capacity, more than one bank branch in the world, and the possibility of buying a house with more storage available. This is a good balance between what the system can handle without creating lag, and what we consider is still a fair amount for new and old players alike.

Existing items over the 300 cap will not disappear. You will not be able to deposit new items until you are below that cap. You can still deposit doubloons. Bundles count as 1 item. All in all, a positive move to have in place before leaving town. One less lag issue to deal with.

The game was rebooted this evening and this change was implemented. Dwarf regen was also corrected, although a, larger regen overhaul is looming.
