10/29 update

Post by Snaek » Tue Oct 29, 2019 7:36 pm

Late on 10/28 we experienced a service outage that lasted roughly 20 hours. Everything is back up and running smoothly now and we are looking into the cause of the outage. At first glance it doesn't appear to be anything malicious. We had been online without interruption since 8/13, making it our longest consecutive day streak ever!

We also just completed work on all things related to the Longest Night of the year. Most of this was already in place and only needed converting to the new events engine, but we also rounded out some of the smaller details such as cleanup of the chaos by city and temple guards, as well as adding seasonal treasure that loads the last week of October. Once we launch, this will be one of the annual weeks where we run double xp to help bring new players in on the fun.

There will also be a planned update this week to address some backend issues and to further test for known bugs. On top of that, new skill unlocks have successfully been moved to come from your Character Level and will start unlocking for new players as soon as the update is complete. That will likely be Wednesday or Thursday night.

More news as it becomes available.

The planned update went through late last evening with everything appearing to be running smoothly thus far. This is the first round of several updates related to the shift from a skill tree format to everything unlocking from a central Character Level. Trade skills will continue to follow their established skill trees, with new skills unlocking from advancing related skills. Class skills however just never fully developed into what I originally imagined and the process was often intimidating to new players. This new approach is simplified and should be clear to new and old players alike where their new abilities will come from. There are some skills that have been left out as they are being reviewed. That work won't be done until after the 1st of the year. Players who already have any skills under review will continue to be able to use them.

This update was also the start of a couple of other components to this system. Class skills and how much they advance your Character Level will now be weighted differently. This isn't a static number you can see, but it's part of the balancing so that classes with fewer skills can still level up as quickly and efficiently as classes with many skills, like mages and priests. Trade skills will continue to raise CL as well, but less so than class skills. Not all skills have been updated to match this approach yet and they will likely trickle in with each update over the next two months.

And on an unrelated note, the MENU command has temporarily been disable while we continue to isolate some troublesome bugs. The hunt continues...

A second round of balancing skills in conjunction with your Character Level (CL) has been completed. At this point in time all skills, spells, prayers, and trades have been weighted to have different impacts on raising your CL. Class skills have the biggest impact, with those classes with the fewest skills getting a larger bump than those with more to choose from, like mages and priests. This is in an effort to balance the classes so they advance at a similar pace. Trade skills remain unchanged, still impacting CL but not as much as your class skills. Quests have not been updated yet but they will end up having the biggest impact.

Since we were already going through each skill to make this change, we took this opportunity to clean up some success rate issues, including adding a racial casting bonus for priests and mages. For priests, humans now have the best casting time, maxing out success faster than any other race. For mages, the 4 elven races have the best casting time. This doesn't change the amount of damage done or how long it takes to cast a prayer or spell, but it does speed up how quickly you max out the success rate of any prayer/spell. Prayers saw an overall increase in success across the board. There will be future work on both to zero in on their casting times, stamina costs, and output sometime after the new year.

Lastly, and this update will likely go in later this week, swimming got a makeover to be more useful. Even though this is a hidden skill everyone has and no one can advance, we wanted to give it some more variety between the races. Now race determines how good you are at swimming, much like climbing. Bolinaus and Nydines are the best at swimming, with gavials close behind. Also, nydines now properly breathe underwater without losing health or receiving any msgs about not being able to breathe. And regarding damage, everyone can now safely return to the water without fear of immediately dying from drowning. The damage has been toned down significantly and will get a future adjustment to be more directly tied to your character stats. There's still a risk of death, but it'll take much longer now at roughly 10 hp per tick. Don't forget to come up for air from time to time!
