Server Reboot 6/4/19

Post by Snaek » Tue Jun 04, 2019 1:55 am

The server was rebooted early on 6/4 after running for 31 days without interruption. We also went without experiencing either of the two major bugs still on our list, both of which cause a character to become corrupted and require a rebuild. There has been work on both of these this year and I believe one of them to be squashed, and the other, if related, could be as well. More testing to be done to confirm both cases, but it's exciting to see the stability of the game improve.

Only one update was pushed through and that is related to the game calendar, something we've been working on extensively these past few months. By now most of you have noticed the brief calendar update you receive when first logging in with a character. This is a part of a larger Events Engine we have implemented to better manage our monthly and yearly reoccurring events. These events, many of which have major contributions from the playerbase, have become a central focus of Shattered Isles and we will be building more around them going forward. One of the biggest issues (there are many) with our calendar of events in the past has been all the different locations we've had to maintain the calendar. There's simply too much room for human error and when a calendar falls behind, it's an obvious sign that we are not on top of things.

There's a lot of details behind how this works and how deeply connected this system is to the game, but that will come at a later date. With this update, the EVENTS command now reflects the full calendar year, with all the major dates listed and updated automatically throughout the year. Some of these may seem like minor changes, but from our perspective, it is a huge relief knowing that something as simple as sending a crier or unlocking a door will now happen on schedule and the players won't miss an opportunity to RP just because a staff member may be inattentive or offline.
